DFER D.C. Issues Statement Condemning House GOP’s Reckless Budget Cuts
Jessica Giles, Executive Director of Democrats for Education Reform D.C. (DFER D.C.), issued a strong statement condemning the House Republicans' continuing resolution, which would slash $1.1 billion from D.C.’s FY2025 budget. The proposed cuts would devastate public education, stripping $192 million from DC Public Schools and $166 million from public charter schools, jeopardizing teacher jobs and essential student support services.
“This reckless move would immediately gut public education,” said Giles. “Congress must stop using D.C. as a political pawn and allow the District to govern itself, just as every other jurisdiction in the country does.”

Washington, D.C. (March 11, 2025) — Today, Jessica Giles, executive director at Democrats for Education Reform D.C. (DFER D.C.), issued a statement on the continuing resolution introduced by House Republicans that would force the District to immediately cut $1.1 billion from the current FY2025 budget:
“The continuing resolution proposed by House Republicans is a direct attack on students and jeopardizes teacher jobs, student supports, and the resources necessary for thriving classrooms. This reckless move would immediately gut public education, slashing $192 million from DC Public Schools and $166 million from public charter schools.
Beyond education, these cuts would destabilize essential services that keep our students and their loved ones safe and strong. Congress must stop using D.C. as a political pawn and allow the District to govern itself, just as every other jurisdiction in the country does.”
